The basic idea
Solar energy is electricity generated from sunlight. Panels mounted on your roof contain photovoltaic (PV) cells that convert sunlight directly into direct current (DC) electricity. An inverter then converts that DC power into the alternating current (AC) power your home actually uses.
There's no combustion, no moving parts in the panels themselves, and no fuel to buy — just sunlight hitting silicon cells and producing a flow of electrons.
Why homeowners consider it
Most homeowners look into solar for one of three reasons: to reduce or eliminate a rising utility bill, to gain more control and independence over where their energy comes from, or to add long-term value to their home. Often it's all three.
